Spain residents are set to benefit from the longest average life expectancy in the world by the year 2040, it has been revealed.

The Mediterranean country has overtaken Japan in the top spot for the first time in many years, according to a new study.

Spaniards will live for an average of 85.8 years by the year 2040, the recent statistics show, while Japanese people will have an average lifespan of 85.7 years

A report by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) published in the journal The Lancet unveiled the new findings.

However, the UK did not make the top 20 for the 2040 life expectancy forecast.

Nevertheless, Britons’ life expectancy is still expected to increase by 2.5 years to an average of 83.3.

The study looked at 195 countries and territories in total and examined 250 causes of death from 2016 to 2040.

Singapore was in third place with an average life expectancy of 85.4 years followed by Switzerland with 85.2 years and Portugal with 84.5 years.

Italy came in sixth place with 84.5 years, Israel with 84.4 years and France with 84.3 years.

Luxembourg and Australia completed the top ten with average life expectancy forecast of 84.1 years each.

According to the IHME, the biggest threats to our health and longevity in the next two decades will be obesity, high blood pressure and blood sugar, tobacco use and drinking alcohol.

“Spain does really well in those,” Dr Christopher Murray, director of the IHME at the University of Washington, told The Guardian, “although tobacco is an area where they could be better. But current life expectancy is very good.”

In Japan, male life expectancy is swaying the average. This is believed to be due to smoking as well as a rise in obesity among men.

The USA is set to take the greatest drop in ranking of all high-income countries.

The study showed it will fall from 43rd place to 64th by 2040 with an average life expectancy of 79.8 years.

This is an increase of just 1.1 years for Americans, well below the average global increase of 4.4 years.

“Whether we see significant progress or stagnation depends on how well or poorly health systems address key health drivers,” Kyle Foreman, director of data science at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and lead author of the study, told CNN.

“The future of the world’s health is not pre-ordained and there is a wide range of plausible trajectories.”

A great threat to life expectancy identified by the report is HIV. “Based on our 2040 worst health scenario, there is a real risk of HIV mortality rebounding if countries lose momentum against the HIV epidemic, jeopardising decades of progress against the disease,” said the report.

It added: “Continued technical innovation and increased health spending, including development assistance for health targeted to the world’s poorest people, are likely to remain vital components to charting a future where all populations can live full, healthy lives.”
